A recent JSNT article by Kevin Grasso (2020) has argued that the syntax of the debated phrase πίστις Χριστοῦ disallows the objective genitive interpretation and should instead be understood according to the ‘third view’ as referring to the Christian religious system. This article examines and responds to Grasso’s article. First, it takes up the argument against the objective genitive interpretation, finding that there is linguistic substantiation for the grammatical viability of this historical view. Second, it takes up the third view interpretation itself, identifying several issues with this view and obstacles that such an interpretation would need to be able to overcome.
