Abstract
In this article the development of nursing as a scientific discipline in Sweden is described and analysed. The analyses are based on two theoretical models, one focusing on the developmental process and the other on the identity or paradigm of the discipline. Concerning development, Sweden has reached a stage of organised activities, but still has no independent research units and no doctoral education. The discipline can be viewed as preparadigmatic, even through some common features can be detected.
Results of analyses of the kind described may govern the further development of the discipline. By similar analyses comparisons can be made with other countries, adjacent disciplines and other points in time.
