Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present a theory model: When nursing becomes an art, and to discuss one of the main findings, the category of Invitation and confirmation.
The superordinate questions to be answered in this research were: 1) What characterises nursing as an art? 2) What does it take to practise nursing as an art? 3) What does the practice of nursing as an art result in? The questions were answered through; 1) a discussion of theory, consisting of a review of reference literature on caring and nursing, 2) a semantic segment, consisting of a semantic analysis of the concept of art, and 3) an empirical segment, consisting of observations and qualitative research interviews of patients and nurses. The results of this research were developed into a theory model, which is presented. The basic categories of the theory model are: 1) Invitation and confirmation; 2) Encounter; 3) Actualisation of values; 4) The act of good will, and 5) Aesthetic communication.
