Abstract
The aim of this study has been to describe how the nursing staff interpret the demens sick person's pain. Furthermore the aim has been to, by the nursing staff's interpretations, design a simpel instrument for analysis of pain.
The method has been interviews.
In the result of the interviews different physical, mental, social and existentiell signs has been proved as an expression of pain for the demens sick. The result was put together to an instrument, framed in a folder that is clear and easy to use.
To work with seriously demens sickness is both physical and mentaly trying work that demands a great commitment and knowledge of the nursing staff. Introductury education for newly employed staff and continuous education is extremely important, which also leads to lower staff turnover.
An increased continuity among the staff gives a greater confidence for the persons receiving care and a nursing with a high quality at a lower cost.
