Vanguards and Oppositional Militants of the Chilean 2006-2019 Protest Cycle

Abstract

The article analyzes how the tactical and strategic tensions between autonomy and institutionalization shaped the course of the Chilean protest cycle from 2006 to 2019. It examines the role of the oppositional militants and vanguards which, by coordinating frameworks of action, repertoires and leaderships, influenced the principal social movements of the period. In addition, it deals with the internal disputes stemming from the differing modes of connection with the state and its institutions. Based on a broad review of documents and forty interviews with politico-social leaders, we reconstruct the process of institutionalization of collectives and organizations, identifying its impact on the expansion, fragmentation and reconfiguration of the politico-social arena. We conclude that that the debates over the ties between the state and social movements were decisive in the exhaustion of the cycle of mobilization and allow us to comprehend the recent transformations of the Chilean Left.

El artículo analiza cómo las tensiones táctico-estratégicas entre autonomía e institucionalización moldearon la trayectoria del ciclo de protestas chileno entre 2006 y 2019. Examina el papel de las militancias impugnadoras y vanguardias que, al articular marcos de acción, repertorios y liderazgos, incidieron en los principales movimientos sociales del período. Asimismo, aborda las disputas internas originadas por los diferentes modos de vinculación con el Estado y sus instituciones. A partir de una amplia revisión documental y cuarenta entrevistas a dirigentes político-sociales, se reconstruye el proceso de institucionalización de colectivos y organizaciones, identificando sus efectos en la expansión, fragmentación y reconfiguración del campo político-social. Se concluye que los debates sobre el vínculo entre Estado y movimientos sociales resultaron decisivos en el agotamiento del ciclo de movilización y permiten comprender las transformaciones recientes de las izquierdas chilenas
