A Matrix Method for the Evaluation of Therapeutic Agents: A Framework Based on Disease Process-Oriented Mechanisms of Drug Action and Their Effectiveness

Abstract

A matrix method has been developed for the evaluation of therapeutic agents based on six categories of therapeutic specificities and three levels of therapeutic effectiveness. The therapeutic specificity categories are based on the relationship between a drug's therapeutic effect and the pathophysiologic process being treated or prevented. The therapeutic effectiveness levels are based on the drug's degree of effectiveness with respect to the underlying disease or disease process. By providing a framework for comparisons across different therapeutic agents, this matrix evaluation method may have applications in assessing different therapeutic options, choosing clinical trials endpoints, and selecting drug discovery targets.
