Abstract
In this era of company downsizing, fierce market competition, and company and department mergers, all facets of pharmaceutical development are underpressure to work more efficiently—to do actually more than before with fewer resources. Teamwork, empowerment, and reengineering are the buzzwords of the 1990s. Halfway through the 1990s, are these real concepts or just fads to be replaced by something else in the year 2000?
Teamwork and empowerment can be used as a realistic and successful approach to reengineering work processes involved in pharmaceutical research and development. This paper will describe some concrete steps, along with pros and cons of building a team, to evaluate current work procedures; recommend new models for workflow; manage reluctance to change; and successfully implement new procedures.
