Document management is increasingly being viewed as a significant area of opportunity for applying information technology to improve the drug development and approval process. This article examines document management from several perspectives, including the strategic uses in research and development (R&D), the components of a document management system, the development of an architecture or framework for implementing document management, and issues to consider when dealing with vendors of document management systems and products.
