In the following paper, the role of phytomedicines in the European Community will be described from the legal viewpoint. The part phytomedicines play in the European marketplace is based on an analysis of past and present discussions on the legal framework for phytomedicines. In addition, the future political activities relating to phytomedicines will be outlined and, in particular, the absolute need for a European policy specific to the area of phytomedicines, will be discussed.
