Abstract
The pharmaceutical industry and academia both offer career paths for pharmacists specializing in drug information. Each setting presents its own distinct opportunities and challenges. A recent shortage of a thrombolytic agent serves as a sample case because of its impact on the Drug Information Analysis Service at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Medical Information Department at Genentech, Inc. The practice differences between these two settings are highlighted as they relate to the shortage, and the effects on each institution are described. The relationship between the work generated by the shortage and its utility as a teaching case during a drug information residency is explored.
