Abstract
Beginning in the middle 1960's office automation and public sector labor relations impacted on the classification systems of many jurisdictions. New class titles evolved as a result of emerging technology and to preserve management “confidentiality.” Clerical classifications were substantially affected by these trends. This article traces the rise and fall of the number of clerical classifications needed to provide effective administrative support as we enter a new decade.
