Abstract
Most respondents to a recent survey know the importance of employee recognition but lack the leadership and organizational support to make it happen in their organizations. The survey was e-mailed to members of the International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR) in the United States and IPMA-Canada. Effective recognition occurs in organizations with a strong, supportive culture, according to survey respondents, and senior management participation in recognition giving is seen as significant, although it is not seen as a reality in many organizations.
