Abstract
In any science the meaning given to concepts and the way they are used profoundly influence the formulation of problems and the manner of seeking solutions. This article based on the experiences of an economics teacher of long-standing innings, traces the distortions introduced into the discipline of economics, legitimised by a long tradition of economists who tried to make it a science like physics with universally valid postulates and principles. In this process the discipline has strayed away from social reality which quintessentially is rooted in social relationships. No wonder development economics has no crucial contribution or critical role to play in conquering under development, inequality and unfreedoms that have undermined the tremendous flourishings which the general mass of humanity could have accomplished over the years. It is in this setting that the article underscores the significance of development as freedom, equality, care and social inclusion.
