A method is described for quick estimation of polyvinyl alcohol and starch content in a warp size mixture on a sized warp beam using an infrared spectrophotometer technique called attenuated total reflectance (ATR). The ATR-IR spectra of the sized warp beam show that the ratio of absorbance at 1000 cm-1 to that at 1095 cm-1 correlates well with the polyvinyl alcohol/starch ratio. Compositions of blends con taining polyvinyl alcohol and starch on warp beams of different substrates were accurate to ±3%.
