Abstract
Dyeing of polyester film from trichloroethylene with three highly purified diperse dyes is reported.
Rate of sorption of each dye by polyester increases greatly with increasing temperature. Equilibrium sorption mea surements indicate that two of the dyes, C. I. Disperse Red 15 und C. I. Disperse Orange 3, give constant partition coefficients. C. I. Disperse Orange 3 gives Freundlich type isotherms, possibly due to aggregation of dye in solution which increases with increasing concentration of dye in solution and with decreasing temperature.
The tendency of dye to transfer from solution to fiher as expressed by the free energy of sorption increases with increas ing polarity of the dye molecules.
The enthalpy of dyeing is used to quantitatively express the effect of temperature on equilibrium sorption of dye by the substrate.
