A study of the behavior of fiber—binder systems has been carried out by bonding single fibers together and carrying out tensile tests on these systems. The behavior at low strain has been related to the tensile properties of the fibers and the shear properties of the binder lying between the fibers. At high strain, failure occurred due to either fiber rupture or slippage of fiber through the bond. The difhculty associated with the prediction of which effect will occur is demonstrated.
