Abstract
Thus far the problem of decorticating ramie and yucca without rendering the fibers brittle and tender has re mained unsolved. If research can solve this problem, we shall have at hand a much-needed substitute for certain fibers which now are sadly lacking. Therefore a recent publication of the Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge, La., should be widely read. This publica tion, "Ramie: A Critical Survey of Facts Concerning the Fiber-Bearing Plant URTICA NIVEA" was written by Dr. G. L. Carter, and Dr. Paul M. Horton, of the Institute of Industrial Research. It contains tables and detailed stud ies of the properties, uses, growing, harvesting, and puri fication of the raw material, and complete bibliography of the literature pertaining to ramie. Following is a brief abstract of some of the studies and conclusions.
