Abstract
Although Greece appears to be a religiously homogeneous country, as the majority of the population belongs to the Orthodox Church, there is much diversity within the Greek Orthodox body itself, which has been neglected so far in related research. Orthodox rigorists of various provenances account for this. These are at times in serious tension and conflict with the official church, while in other instances they collaborate with it for common purposes. The author aims to outline this phenomenon by focusing on the main bearers of rigorism and their activities, the socio-historical background and the contemporary socio-cultural context of this phenomenon, their relations to the official church, and the principal issues of controversy between them.
