Sociometric measures may be conceived of as indicators of distance among group members. Multidimensional scaling methods have also been developed to measure distances among objects and appear to offer several advantages. The study reported compares the two techniques, and while there is some overlap, MDS appears to offer a promising approach to the study of the relationships among group members.
