Abstract
This study was concerned with subjective fragmentation of luminous designs. It was found that: (1) degree of meaningfulness did not influence amount or pattern of fragmentation, (2) angular structures showed greater fragmentation than rounded structures, and (3) fragmentation was greatest for the fixated and immediately adjacent area. (4) Whole lines tended to disappear and reappear as separate units. The interrelationship between structure and fixation as variables influencing fragmentation was discussed in the general context of Hebb's (1963) hypothesis regarding the role of perceptual "units" in the development of stimulus structure.
