Although many states and school systems have taken steps to address the need to develop stu dents' global perspectives, lack of teacher preparation is a major obstacle. This study identified 30 teacher education programs in the United States that prepare secondary social studies teachers to teach with a global perspective. Program characteristics, content, strengths, and implications for the movement for global education are discussed. There seems to be a consensus that global education must include knowledge of cultural universals and diversity, global systems, and global issues. Most teacher education in global perspectives, however, is characterized by brief inservice presentations that are relatively weak in such subjects as history, the environment, and technology.
