Abstract
Richard Kunkel served as Executive Director of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) from 1984 to 1990. During that time the Council underwent a major change. The new standards were written; the corporate and governance structures were overhauled, and the accreditation process was vastly changed. Kunkel discusses the impact of accreditation and the NACTE redesign on the improvement of the profession of teaching. Kunkel is currently Dean of the College of Education at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala bama.
