Abstract
Alternative certification is a topic of criti cal importance to teacher educators and the general public. Hawk and Schmidt examined the differences between two groups of teachers, one prepared through a traditional teacher prepara tion curriculum and the second pre pared through a lateral entry (or alterna tive) certification program (LEP), which involved a year of academic and field- based study. The authors found that LEP participants are as competent in the school classrooms and as successful on NTE exams as traditionally prepared stu dents. The findings also suggest that those with undergraduate disciplinary majors do not demonstrate greater con tent knowledge on the NTE exams than education majors who pursue similar fields for certification.
