Abstract
Testing prospective teachers in the basic skills is becoming standard practice for admission to a teacher education pro gram. Regrettably, the practice has had adverse effects on certain segments of the population. Heger and Salinger describe the importance of continuing to prepare minority and Hispanic stu dents. Furthermore, they identify methods of testing that might be used to identify preservice teacher language and computational deficiencies. The emphasis at UTEP, according to the authors, is on diagnosing and remediat ing problems so that prospective teachers can start their professional studies with adequate intellectual skills.
