This article offers an individual need-based distance model for the explanation and prediction of brand preference. The model is based upon the hypothetical symmetry between a consumer's needs and his perception of alternative brands’ ability to satisfy those needs. Both the theoretical basis for the model and a series of empirical tests are discussed.
