Abstract
A case study is presented that describes the experiences of a nonverbal child in a regular elementary classroom. By teaching this child an alternate communication system (Signed English) and by training his classroom teacher and peers in the use of this specialized system, the child has been able to function socially and educationally in a normalized environment. Benefits to this child's nonhandicapped classmates are discussed.
