Parenteral nutrition (PN) prescriptions for patients transferred from other health care environments are written in a variety of prescribing formats and labeling templates. Six macronutrient and two micronutrient ordering formats have been identified. Interpretation and compounding of these PN prescriptions require time-consuming calculations. With the aid of a commonly used PC spreadsheet software, interpreting and compounding can be carried out within minutes after the ordering format is identified.
