Abstract
The Changing what you eat booklets were developed for use in one-to-one nutrition counselling in the primary health care setting. This paper describes a study to pre-test draft versions of the booklets with patients and practice nurses. Overall the response to both the patient booklet and the guide for professionals was positive. The assessment tool, 'What do you eat?' and the food groups model, 'The healthy food selection guide' were especially liked. There were concerns about the notion of a 'Contract for change'. The need for appropriate training for health professionals was highlighted.
