Abstract
THE Health Education Council's South-West alcohol programme, Understanding Alcohol, is being evaluated by a team of researchers (also funded by the HEC) at the School for Advanced Urban Studies at Bristol University As part of this work, Randall Smith - the joint head of the team - has prepared a report which examines the national context of alcohol policy and alcohol edu cation within which the South-West programme finds itself, docu menting particularly the development of the Health Education Council, its alcohol programme and the relationships between the various agencies involved in this area, including the DHSS. The report, The National Politics of Alcohol Education: a review, has been published by SA US as a Working Paper, and is summarised below.
