THE relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors in the development of obesity are disputed. There is a certain school of thought that attributes all fatness to gluttony: 'Since the immediate causes of obesity are overeating and underexercising the remedies are available to all, but many patients require much help in using them' (Davidson & Passmore, 1969)
