Abstract
Four focus groups were conducted to gather information about coping issues and teacher attitudes related to the education of children with a neuromuscular disease (NMD). Focus Group 1 consisted of individuals with NMD, Group 2 consisted of parents of children with NMD, and Groups 3 and 4 consisted of public school teachers of students of NMD. Coded and categorized data suggested a number of unique and common concerns about children with NMD including (a) a need for better communication between home and school, (b) a need to establish a sense of competence on the part of the children, and (c) a need for improved peer relationships. A Map of Concerns emerged from the focus group data.
