A model of informal communication is presented and supporting literature briefly described. Then two studies are presented that examine the link between elements of the physical environment and informal social interaction in departmental lounges. Environmental features involving location of the lounges were relatively strong predictors of the amount of lounge use; It is argued that location of the lounge has an indirect effect on the nature of communication within an organization.
