A survey of housing in Kumasi, the second city of Ghana, has revealed a severe shortage of accommodation. The traditional religion of Asante was found to be a major determinant of attitudes toward land and housing. Policies for the rapid increase in housing stock, based on Turner's concepts of self-help, are found to be incongruent with the religious and economic realities of housing supply, but other resources are present that can form the basis of a workable strategy.
