Abstract
This study compared the relative effectiveness of total communication and oral communication training in a parent-assisted, home-based language intervention program. Two groups consisting of a total of 15 Down's syndrome children, 18- to 36-months old, received systematic language training for 5 months. Although children in the total communication group successfully acquired signs, there were no significant differences between the groups in their rate of language and cognitive development.
