Patterns of (Mis)Behavior: An Assessment of Predictors of Institutional Misconduct Among Elderly Incarcerated Individuals

Abstract

The incarcerated elderly population has been steadily increasing in the past few decades. Placed in a prison system not designed to attend to their needs, the elderly face a myriad of challenges and struggle to adjust to the rules and expectations of the correctional system. Our study builds on previous works to assess the heterogeneity within this population and assessing the predictors of institutional misconduct among two theoretically distinct group of incarcerated elderly: those imprisoned young(er) and those imprisoned for a crime they committed while elderly. Results highlight the importance of age-specific programing to attend to the needs of a diverse incarcerated population.
