Most leg cramps are benign and self-limited. Idiopathic nocturnal leg cramp is the most common form of cramps. Occasionally, leg cramps may signify a significant systemic disorder. Investigations are usually not necessary unless indicated by the history or physical examination. Symptomatic treatment consists of stretching the affected calf muscle by forcible dorsiflexion of the foot.
