Abstract
The Medical Research Council of Great Britain has set up a Conference committee to appraise "the practical problems of detection, early treatment, and subsequent care of children suffering from phenylketonuria." The Conference has 20 distin guished members, under the chairmanship of Pro fessor A. A. Moncrieff.
Presented here is a condensation of the Report of this Conference, as published in The British Medical Journal of June 29, 1963. Reprints of the entire Report in pamphlet form may be obtained from the Publishing Manager, B. M. A. House, Tavistock Square, London, W.C.1, price Is. 6d., including postage (25 copies or more at Is. each, including postage).
In addition to the clinical discussions outlined here, the Report contains a detailed description of the laboratory method for estimation of l-phenyl alanine in blood using l-amino-acid oxidase and an ultrafiltrate of plasma; tables giving the com position of commercially available low-phenyl alanine preparations and the recommended daily vitamin supplements; instructions for construction of a low-phenylalanine diet; and a table listing the phenylalanine content of common foods.
