Abstract

Background.

Both the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) and World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) fieldwork guidelines promote fieldwork experiences that build community capacity. Yet, no existing tool that assesses the unique skills of community development fieldwork could be identified within or outside of occupational therapy.

Purpose.

This article describes the development of the Community Development Progress and Evaluation Tool (CD-PET), an assessment of community development fieldwork in occupational therapy.

Tool Development.

The CD-PET was developed in five distinct phases: (a) literature review, (b) identification of a theoretical framework, (c) tool construction, (d) pilot testing, and (e) ongoing refinement. Focus groups yielded input from preceptors and students. Once developed, the assessment was pilot tested with feedback received through an online survey completed by preceptors and students. Key enablement skills identified in Enabling Occupation II provided the foundation for the tool.

Implication.

The CD-PET is a student assessment and learning tool for occupational therapy students and preceptors that supports learning in the key enablement skills that are used in community development fieldwork.

Les directives de l’Association canadienne des ergothérapeutes (ACE) et de la Fédération mondiale des ergothérapeutes (FME) préconisent les expériences de stage qui favorisent l’acquisition de compétences en développement communautaire. Toutefois, aucun outil permettant d’évaluer les compétences uniques mises à contribution lors des stages en développement communautaire n’a été identifié, que ce soit en ergothérapie ou dans d’autres domaines.

L’article décrit comment le Community Development Progress and Evaluation Tool (CD-PET), une évaluation des stages en développement communautaire en ergothérapie, a été conçu.

Élaboration de l’outil.

Le CD-PET a été conçu en cinq étapes distinctes : (a) recension des écrits, (b) identification du cadre théorique, (c) construction de l'outil, (d) mise à l'essai, et (e) amélioration continue. Des groupes de discussion ont permis de recueillir les rétroactions des précepteurs et des étudiants. Une fois qu'elle a été conçue, l'évaluation a été mise à l'essai, en tenant compte des commentaires recueillis lors d'un sondage mené auprés des précepteurs et des étudiants. Les compétences habilitantes clés décrites dans le livre Habiliter à l'occupation ont permis de jeter les bases de l'outil.

Conséquence.

Le CD-PET est un outil d'évaluation de l'étudiant et un outil d'apprentissage pour les étudiants et les précepteurs qui favorise l’apprentissage des compétences habilitantes clés utilisées pendant les stages en développement communautaire.
