Abstract
The article offers a close reading of Henry Vaughan’s 1655 poem, “They are all gone into the world of light!” The essay is prefaced by a brief discussion of Vaughan. References are made to other poets who have responded to this poem, especially its opening line, including T. S. Eliot, Robert Lowell, James Merrill, and Seamus Heaney. Attention is also paid to the presence of the psalms and Vaughan’s interest in nature.
