Abstract
Background
The proximal radio-ulnar joint (PRUJ)-plasty is a new biologic procedure devised to restore an elbow joint after the humero-ulnar joint is destroyed by trauma or infection, or after the distal humerus is resected for tumour.
Methods
After osteotomies on either side of the PRUJ, the joint is rotated 90° and fixed to the distal humerus and the proximal ulna, and functions as a vascularized, innervated synovial elbow joint.
Results
Four young patients had the procedure: one after tumour resection of the distal humerus, another for non-union of the distal humerus and an ankylosed elbow, and two for an old arthrodesis of the elbow after an infection years before.
Conclusion
Postoperatively, three patients had an active elbow joint range of movement from 70° to 120°, and one failed and ankylosed again.
