Hypoparathyroidism is the most common complication after thyroidectomy. Permanent hypoparathyroidism can cause significant visceral damage, diminish quality of life, and potentially impact mortality. There is broad agreement that identification and preservation of the parathyroid glands during surgery is the optimal approach to prevent this complication. The steps of this process are reviewed in this video and tips to facilitate success outcomes are discussed.
