Abstract
Introduction:
Bariatric surgery is a treatment method that is gaining popularity in the world and Turkey due to the inadequacy of traditional methods in obesity treatment in achieving the desired results and the need for long-term treatment coverage. This study aimed to investigate the effect of music on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) management and patient satisfaction in individuals undergoing bariatric surgery.
Methods:
A total of 48 patients, 24 in the experimental group and 24 in the control group, were included in this study. Music therapy was applied to the experimental group participants just before the 2nd and 6th hours after surgery, while the control group participants were routinely monitored without intervention.
Results:
There was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of PONV severity and Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting Impact Scale scores at the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 12th, and 24th hours (p > 0.05). Music therapy was associated with statistically significantly higher nurse satisfaction in the experimental group (p < 0.05).
Conclusion:
The results of this study indicate that music therapy has no significant effect on PONV after bariatric surgery but is effective in increasing patient satisfaction.
