Abstract
Background:
In 2013, Maricopa Integrated Health System in Phoenix, Arizona, introduced acupuncture as a health care benefit for its 4000-plus employees at the main campus. Acupuncture benefit was limited to pain-related conditions and to 20 visits per year. The feedback was very positive, and in 2014 unlimited acupuncture visits for any medical condition were allowed. Ninety-one patients were treated for pain-related conditions.
Objective:
To evaluate the nature and outcome of different diagnosis, to describe certain treatment details, and to report financial savings by preventing absenteeism.
Methods:
French meridian acupuncture was the method of treatment. Pain was assessed by using a visual analogue scale score. Lack of absenteeism was self-reported by patients.
Results:
The average pain score on initiation of treatment was 8. At the end of treatment, it was 0. No absenteeism occurred during the 6- to 8-week treatment period. Average number of treatment sessions was 4. Financial savings were calculated.
Conclusion:
Employer-sponsored acupuncture treatments for painful conditions among employees both reduced pain and prevented absenteeism, which led to financial savings for the employer.
