Abstract
Abstract
Background:
Osteitis pubis (OP) is an inflammatory process of the pubic symphysis manifested as pelvic and lower abdominal pain. It is usually self-limited but often becomes chronic before resolving and necessitates restriction of physical activities; for athletes, osteitis pubis can result in significant time away from participation in sports. Treatment options are varied and typically have poor success rates.
Case:
A 48-year-old male presented with OP, presumably caused by a basketball-related injury. His condition was was unresponsive to watchful waiting and conventional interventions for >16 months.
Results:
After a single treatment with percutaneous periosteal electrical stimulation, the patient's symptoms improved significantly temporarily and then completely resolved after three additional treatments.
Conclusions:
Medical acupuncture may be a useful approach for managing OP.
