Abstract
The biomedical acupuncture model for pain management is a novel approach defined by neuroanatomy and neurophysiology and characterized by clinical reproducibility, predictability, and standardization while still maintaining the benefits of the classical acupuncture model. The biomedical acupuncture model is based on biomedical research and clinical evidence collected over the past 40 years. This model includes the Integrative Neuromuscular Acupoint System, a neuroanatomically and physiologically defined acupoint system; a quantitative evaluation method to predict prognosis of acupuncture treatment; and a standard yet individualized treatment protocol for most patients with acute or chronic pain. This model is described herein and 2 cases are presented to illustrate the treatment protocol and results.
