Abstract

Twenty kilometres from Perth, located at the mouth of the Swan River on the Indian Ocean, Fremantle (Freo to the locals) is a living and working city. Known for its rich cultural diversity and cosmopolitan influences, Fremantle is rich with history, heritage, architecture, culture and art.
The West End of Fremantle, around the University of Notre Dame, is regarded as the most intact example of a 19th century Victorian port city in the world. Hundreds of beautiful buildings line the streets with many of them flourishing in their new lives as restaurants, museums, boutiques, markets and cafes.
A comprehensive tourist booklet can be found in the satchel. This booklet will provide a map of both Perth city and Fremantle, along with a great selection of cafes, restaurants and a variety of sights and events taking place during August.

The film Out of the Shadow, directed, produced and photographed by Susan Smiley, was filmed over five years. It chronicles the filmmaker's mother, Millie, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. With grace and compassion, this intimate film illustrates the painful complexities of severe mental illness and the woefully inadequate U.S. public health system set up to deal with it. Determined to get better care for their mother, Susan and her sister Tina became Millie's legal guardians. As they work together to improve her future, the sisters must come to terms with their family's tumultuous past. For years, the family's ignorance and shame kept Millie's behaviour shrouded in a veil of secrecy. Now, after 20 years of transience and inadequate care, Millie finally has a chance to reclaim her life.
The screening will be in the Pleiades and Sirius rooms from 6:00 pm. Entry is complimentary and open to the public. Facilitators for the film session are Dr Norman Swan and Prof Assen Jablensky. After the screening, there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
