Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic led to national lockdown measures, implying individuals’ household confinement, constraining active contact with outdoor nature, with potential associated mental health consequences. Hence, this cross-sectional correlational design study with 310 participants examined the relationship between self-reported measures of variety and intensity of indoor/outdoor activities involving contact with nature, life satisfaction and affect during the first nationwide lockdown in Portugal in 2020. Results showed a positive weak association between indoor activity intensity and positive affect, and between reported indoor mental recreation of contact with nature and negative affect. Actual indoor contact with nature was positively associated with life satisfaction and positive affect. Individuals without a variety of contact with indoor nature reported lower life satisfaction than those with high variety. Indoor contact with nature seemed particularly important for well-being during lockdown. During prolonged household confinement, mental health and well-being could be promoted through outdoor contact but indoor alternatives should also be considered.
The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the spread of SARS-CoV-2 across the world, placed a greater range of demands on citizens than what was considered ‘normal’ before it emerged. This increased the need for mobilizing resources to preserve people’s physical, psychological and social well-being (Gaspar et al., 2020). A series of virus transmission control measures were implemented worldwide, the most common of which was lockdown. Lockdown measures implied individuals’ household confinement, with the goal to reduce the mobility of individuals who did not have essential functions (such as, e.g., health professions) and overall social interactions among large numbers of people. This was initially implemented due to the uncertainty associated with whether someone could be a virus carrier while being asymptomatic (Brooks et al., 2020), given that resources such as rapid diagnostic tests, effective contact tracing and vaccination were not available then. People were only authorized to engage in essential activities, such as work or procuring food, medication or healthcare (Sandín et al., 2020). Thus, a national lockdown implied the suspension of many economic and commercial activities, mobility outside the home and physically proximate social interactions. It also restrained contact with outdoor nature, given that going outside the home became more restricted to a small area (e.g., only to the neighbourhood) or even not permitted.
Contact with nature is known to have a restorative effect on people’s well-being as several studies have reported positive associations between active engagement in activities in natural settings and well-being (Wyles et al., 2019; Russell et al., 2013). Given the constraints that lockdowns impose on people’s contact with nature and the potential effects on their physical and psychological well-being, it is important to determine whether the relationship between contact with nature and subjective well-being is maintained or whether it suffers disruption during prolonged home confinement periods. Given this, three interrelated components were studied: life satisfaction, positive and negative affect (Simões, 1992; Pavot et al., 1991; Diener, 2000) and contact with nature. Concerning the latter, in addition to contact with outdoor nature, contact with nature indoors and also indirect contact with nature (e.g., by watching nature documentaries, observing a garden through a window or the act of thinking about/mentally recreating contact with nature) were also considered. These latter two types of contact are much less studied in research on the relationship between nature and well-being but may have an important function, worth studying. This is because indoor contact and indirect contact with nature might have represented a compensation for the absent/reduced contact with outdoor nature, functioning as a resource for maintaining or restoring well-being, especially if the activities performed were varied and intense/frequent.
Thus, this study sought to evaluate the relationship between direct/indirect contact with outdoor/indoor nature, life satisfaction and affectivity during the COVID-19 lockdown, particularly looking at the type of contact (direct vs. indirect; outdoor vs. indoor) and its variety and intensity.
Well-being and contact with nature: direct-indirect and indoor-outdoor
According to the United Nations Population Division, in 2014, approximately half of the world’s population, 54%, lived in urban areas, and by 2050, this number is expected to rise to 66% (United Nations Department of Economics and Social Affairs, 2014). As the population grows, available space may become reduced. This is relevant because evidence shows that the percentage of green spaces in residential areas is positively related to residents’ general perception of health. Therefore, it can be argued that such spaces should be seen as more than a luxury and made central to urban planning as a promoter of public and social health (Maas et al., 2006).
Nature brings with it the idea of bio-psycho-social restoration. This study focuses on well-being as a restorative category comprising the combination of biological, psychological and socio-environmental variables. Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989), for example, describes nature as having the greatest restorative potential — the ability to reactivate mental effort after a period of intensive work. Likewise, Ulrich’s Stress Recovery Theory states that natural environments activate the functions of the parasympathetic system associated with physical and psychological restoration (Ulrich, 1983). Furthermore, contact with nature negatively correlates with depression and anxiety (Tomasi et al., 2020).
Given this, one of the aspects that the study presented here looked at was direct and active contact, defined as being in close proximity to outdoor nature, like spending time in a garden, forests, fields, at beaches, or other such locations (Russell et al., 2013). This contact with natural spaces has been reported to improve physical and mental health and well-being. Accordingly, research has shown that visiting nature one or more times per week is associated with better health (Martin et al., 2020). Being outdoors (air, water, land, soils, biodiversity, landscapes, oceans and seas) has also been associated with an increase in well-being levels, such as happiness and life satisfaction (Russell et al., 2013). Quantitative studies have revealed that daily contact with nature for a month is related to higher rates of happiness and overall health (Richardson et al., 2016). Another study found that a minimum of 120 minutes per week was needed to contribute to improved well-being (White et al., 2019).
On the other hand, some studies have also looked into active indoor contact with nature, that is, human-made internal spaces that can incorporate natural light or other resources, such as plants (Russell et al., 2013). Evidence collected has suggested that well-being may positively correlate with direct indoor contact with nature, such as in offices with exposed plants, where workers reported higher levels of well-being, including job and personal satisfaction (Korpela et al., 2017).
Even less frequently found in research, this study also looked into indirect contact with nature-defined as activities that involve appreciating the natural elements without direct interaction with them. Examples included listening to music with sounds of nature, watching nature-related television programmes and seeing photographs of landscapes (Russell et al., 2013). The literature suggests that the visual stimulation of videos or photographs of natural environments like forests may be associated with a considerable increase in the perceptions of feelings such as ‘relaxed’ and ‘comfortable’, while also being associated with significant increases in positive affect and significant decreases in negative affect (McAllister et al., 2017). According to Moran (2019), in isolated contexts, e.g., prisons, indirect contact with nature (e.g., looking at forest images) leads to heightened positive emotions and decreased aggressiveness. In addition to this, it can be questioned whether the act of thinking about or mentally recreating contact with nature, in the absence of any stimuli (visual, auditive and sensitive), may also have similar positive effects.
Overall, it is relevant to explore the restorative power of nature beyond the outdoor contacts, as indoor contact, indirect contacts or even mentally simulated contact. Therefore, given that further research is needed on this, the study presented here sought to contribute to such a gap.
Moreover, we also sought to assess implications of variety of contact, defined here as a range of stimuli and activities during the natural experience. If people evaluate the restorative potential of nature according to the characteristics they associate with it, and if these attributes reflect their particular internal and external context, a greater variety of contact might be beneficial. In other words, the wider the activity range, the greater the possibility of choosing a form of enjoying nature with restorative benefits. The various types of contact should, then, be analysed regarding their restorative, homoeostatic gain — the greater the contact variety, the greater its restorative capacity. Moreover, the intensity of contact, defined in terms of frequency and duration, which can be quantified on a scale from low to high, may also be beneficial. Both intensity and variety may translate into higher quantity and quality of experience of contact with nature.
Well-being during a lockdown
On 30 January 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern. On 11 March 2020, it was classified as a pandemic. Since then, several studies have reported a relationship between home confinement due to national lockdowns and well-being, revealing the negative side effects (e.g., confusion, anger and even post-traumatic stress symptoms) for months, suggesting that it can have a high impact on health and well-being (Brooks et al., 2020). Other cross-sectional studies found that a majority of participants reported sleep difficulties, absence of physical activity and some degree of stress due to the lockdown (e.g., Bezerra et al., 2020). All these studies show the relevance of considering mental health impacts of public health measures intended to control disease transmission. Indeed, the psychological and social risks that emerged with the COVID-19 pandemic make it relevant to pay attention to the personal and social resources that may promote personal and collective well-being in coping with the demands that emerge in times of crisis and social emergencies. Public health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic can change humans’ relationship with nature and highlight the potential of environmental psychology in contributing to a greater understanding of social transformation and crisis coping (Reese et al., 2020). COVID-19, in particular, serves as a prime example of a change in the social system that threatened individuals’ basic need for connection and associated motivations, with impacts on mental health (Hagerty & Williams, 2020; Sandín et al., 2020).
Accordingly, recent studies have identified that the pandemic and its lockdown have impacted mental health in varying ways: concern for family members and one’s self; psychological exhaustion arising from constant preventive measures and prolonged home confinement due to the national lockdown; a sense of lack of control; and emotions such as anger, distress and a pressing sense of monotony and boredom resulting from the slower pace of life (Fardin, 2020; Hamouche, 2020; S. Li et al., 2020). Moreover, nature seems to influence the well-being of all individuals regardless of socioeconomic status, in a transversal movement to the whole society. Different levels of lockdown restrictions seemed to reflect an increased (when stricter lockdown rules were applied) or decreased (less strict measures) probability of suffering mental health disorders. Moreover, contact with nature may mitigate adverse effects of lockdown (Pouso et al., 2021). In accordance, Heo et al. (2021) reported that visiting green spaces (e.g., forests) may be performed with the goal of stress relief. They found that individuals who decreased visits to greenspaces had a higher probability of developing major depression, compared to those whose visits to greenspaces were maintained. Moreover, they found a decrease in availability/access to green spaces due to physical/social distancing restrictions and fear of COVID-19.
Grounded in the literature concerning the relationship between contact with nature and mental health, we decided to examine this, specifically in the context of a national lockdown that imposed home confinement.
Theoretical model
The theoretical model (Figure 1) which is the basis for this study was based on the model proposed by Hartig et al. (2014), which focused on explaining how natural environments affect human health and well-being. From this model, we measured different ways of connecting with nature, using duration and frequency as variables. Based on Hartig’s model, our proposed model included different kinds of direct/indirect and outdoor/indoor contact with nature (e.g., gardening, going for a walk in a forest).
Further on, the conceptual framework from Li and colleagues was also considered (H. Li et al., 2021), incorporating other modes of contact, such as indoor and indirect contact (e.g., seeing plants from the window).
Altogether, this study aimed to extend the existing literature and models concerning the relationship between contact with nature and psychological well-being, by including mental recreation as well as other types of indirect contact with nature in the conceptual framework (e.g., watching a nature-related documentary or listening to nature sounds).
Research objectives
The current study was implemented during the first national lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal, between March and May 2020, providing a unique opportunity to examine contact with nature while enduring home confinement.
Hence this study provides an example that may be applicable to other situations where confinement to a living space is prescribed (e.g., national disasters with prolonged duration) or mandatory (e.g., prisons, prolonged stays in hospitals). In the current study, indoor contact included direct contact with nature (e.g., watering plants, watching nature from the household windows) and indirect contact (e.g., watching nature documentaries on TV). Lastly, and based on similar studies, we considered the frequency and duration of contact with nature as the quantitative variables. On the other hand, we included the variety (different types) of contact with nature as the qualitative variables, which is less common to find in the existing literature. Adding to this, we considered the intensity of contact with nature, a quantitative variable combining frequency and duration (which was not commonly found in previous studies).
Overall, we looked at the relationship between the type of nature contact during lockdown, life satisfaction and positive and negative affect.
Three research questions guided our understanding and explanation of this goal: Is there a relation between intensity and variety of contact with nature with variables related to psychological well-being such as positive and negative emotions and life satisfaction? Are there differences in positive and negative emotions and life satisfaction in relation to the degree of intensity and variety of outdoor vs. indoor contact? Is there a relationship between mental recreation of contact with nature and the variables related to psychological well-being?
Methods
Research design
A cross-sectional correlational design was implemented between March and April 2020, during the first Portuguese nationwide lockdown applied in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, to collect quantitative survey data. In this study, the following variables were considered: life satisfaction; positive and negative affect; the variety and intensity of active contact with nature, direct and indirect, in indoor and outdoor environments; and mental recreation.
Sample
The sample was mainly recruited through social media, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, through a snowball sampling technique. This comprised 310 participants, 113 (36.45%) male and 197 (63.55%) female. Sixty-four (20.6%) participants lived in rural areas and 246 (79.4%) in urban ones. The average age of the participants was 35.18 years (SD = 14.993), ranging from 18 to 83. Regarding education level, three participants (0.9%) had a primary school education (ages six to 15), 82 (26.5%) had completed secondary school (ages 15 to 18), 140 (42.5%) held a bachelor’s degree, 58 (18.7%) had a master’s degree, 22 (7.1%) had a post-graduate degree, and five (1.6%) participants had earned a PhD.
The inclusion criteria considered adulthood (18 years of age minimum), residence in Portugal, Portuguese nationality and proficiency in reading and writing the language. Concerning exclusion criteria, to prevent biases, participants who had been under the effect of psychopharmacological medication during the previous two months and those who in the last six months had been diagnosed with a mental disorder were excluded from the study. Yet, they were not informed about their exclusion to avoid feelings of discrimination.
Measures
An online questionnaire created on the Qualtrics platform was sent online to participants during lockdown (from 3 April to 19 April). The survey included informed consent and information about the ethical considerations of the research.
Two psychological measures evaluating subjective well-being were incorporated into the questionnaire, both applicable to Portuguese adults: SWLS — Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener et al., 1985), Portuguese version (Simões, 1992, α = .77); in this study, α = .79. This scale contains five items, with a Likert-type scale ranging from 1 ‘strongly disagree’ to 5 ‘strongly agree’, regarding the past two weeks. One example is ‘My living conditions are very good.’ PANAS — Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson et al., 1988), the reduced version of the Portuguese scale (Galinha et al., 2014; the reliability was high for positive affect, α = .82, and negative affect, α = .83, and in this study, positive affect α = .73 and negative affect α = .81. This scale includes 10 items, ranging from 1 ‘Very slightly or not at all’ to 5 ‘Extremely’, regarding the past two weeks. A high value for positive emotions indicated high levels of well-being, while negative affect measured low. An example of positive affectivity would be ‘Interested’, while negative affectivity was allocated to ‘Nervous’.
Additionally, the following were used to measure the intensity (duration and frequency) of the different types of contact with nature: Outdoor contact with nature during lockdown was assessed with questions such as ‘Currently, during the pandemic lockdown/quarantine, select the type(s) of contact with nature that you maintain outside of the house’. Examples of some items were camping, hiking and tours. Indoor contact with nature (whether directly — e.g., watering plants — or indirectly — e.g., watching nature documentaries) during lockdown was assessed with questions such as ‘Currently, in a situation of lockdown, select the type(s) of contact with nature that you carry out indoors (including backyards and balconies)’. Some examples of items were agriculture, gardening and observing nature through a window to the outside. Questions regarding the duration of contact with nature, in the assessment of indoor and outdoor contact, included ‘On average, how long does it last each time you walk?’. Examples of some answered items: ‘up to 30 minutes’, ‘from two hours to three hours’. Questions regarding the frequency of contact with nature, in the assessment of indoor and outdoor contact, included ‘In this situation of voluntary social isolation/[mandatory] quarantine, how often do you walk?’ Example of some answered items: ‘one to two times a month’, ‘one time a week’
From these questions, new composite variables were created: Intensity of outdoor contact and Intensity of indoor contact, which resulted from the computation of duration x frequency (on a scale including 0 — Inexistent, 1 — Low intensity, 2 — Medium intensity and 3 — High intensity) for each contact type, i.e., the activity duration (average duration considering all activities performed, separated into outdoors and indoors) by the activity frequency (average frequency considering all activities performed, separated into outdoors and indoors). The variety of contact represented the average number of different types of activities performed, separated into outdoor and indoor contact (on a scale including 0 — Inexistent, 1 — Low variety and 2 — High variety; note: initially, a ‘medium variety’ category was created, but due to the low number of responses in it, these were aggregated with the ‘high’ category).
To assess mental recreation, we created an item — ‘In the present situation of lockdown, I mentally recreate contact with nature’ — to be answered on a Likert scale (1 ‘strongly disagree’ to 5 ‘strongly agree’).
Lastly, the socio-demographic section of the questionnaire included questions about sex, age, usage of mental health services and psychopharmacological medication intake, residence context (rural/urban) and satisfaction with green spaces in the residential area.
Statistical analysis
First, to estimate the scales used in the study, their alpha coefficients were calculated. Next, in addition to descriptive analyses performed, correlations were performed to assess the relationship between the intensity and variety of contact with nature and the components of well-being. To determine the differences between the variables in this study, three two-way sets of factorial Analysis of Variance (ANOVAs) were performed, considering the intensity of contact with nature (indoor and outdoor) and variety of contact with nature (indoor and outdoor) as factors, and as the dependent variables, life satisfaction, positive positive and negative affect. Age, sex and context of residence (urban or rural) were explored as covariates in this analysis. Moreover, discriminant analysis was performed to validate the results obtained. Lastly, following the work of White et al. (2017), the role of mental recreation of contact was also explored, through the analysis of differences in the dependent variables as a function of differences in levels of recreation.
Results
Relationship between intensity and variety, negative/positive affect and life satisfaction

Differences in negative/positive affect and life satisfaction as a function of intensity and variety of outdoor vs. indoor contact with nature
After validating the assumptions to perform the analysis, three four-way Analyses of Variance (ANOVA) were performed for each of the three dependent variables — life satisfaction, positive and negative affect — with the intensity of contact with nature (indoor and outdoor) and variety of contact with nature (indoor and outdoor) as independent variables. This analysis also included as co-variates age, sex and context of residence (urban or rural).
Concerning life satisfaction, results revealed that indoor contact intensity, F(3, 25) = 0.413, p = .744, η2 = .004, outdoor contact intensity, F(2, 25) = 0.571, p = .565, η2 = .004, and outdoor contact variety, F(1, 25) = 0.800, p = .372, η2 = .003, showed no significant effect on well-being. A marginally significant effect was found for indoor contact variety, F(2, 25) = 2.957, p = .054, η2 = .020. With regard to positive affect, results revealed that indoor contact intensity, F(3, 25) = 0.734, p = .533, η2 = .008, and outdoor contact intensity, F(2, 25) = 0.764, p = .467, η2 = .005, showed no significant effect on well-being. A significant effect was found for outdoor contact variety, F(1, 25) = 4.412, p = .037, η2 = .015, and for indoor contact variety, F(2, 25) = 3.201, p = .042, η2 = .022. Lastly, for negative affect, no significant results were found for indoor contact intensity, F(3, 25) = 1.272, p = .284, η2 = .014, outdoor contact intensity, F(2, 25) = 0.522, p = .594, η2 = .004, outdoor contact variety, F(1, 25) = 0.144, p = .704, η2 = .002, and indoor contact variety, F(2, 25) = 0.517, p = .597, η2 = .003. Additionally, age had a significant effect as covariate for positive affect, F(1, 18) = 7.649, p = .006, η2 = .026, and sex had a significant effect as covariate for negative affect, F(1, 18) = 16.391, p < .001, η2 = .053. No other significant results were found in addition to these.
Given the significant results obtained and to further validate

and explore these, post hoc tests (Bonferroni), were performed for outdoor and indoor contact variety. Results showed no significant differences between levels of outdoor variety for the three dependent variables. Differently, for the indoor variety, results showed that the life satisfaction in the inexistent indoor variety group (M = 16.42; SD = 0.50) was significantly lower (p = .015) than in the low indoor activities variety group (M = 16.51; SD = 0.44) and significantly lower (p = .005) than in the high indoor activities variety group (M = 17.25; SD = 0.36), with no significant differences between the latter two (p = .974). With regard to positive affect, post hoc tests showed that in the low indoor variety group (M = 13.03; SD = 0.39), it was significantly lower (p = .042) than in the high indoor activities variety group (M = 14.19; SD = 0.29), with no significant differences between the inexistent indoor variety group (M = 13.42; SD = 0.36) and the low indoor variety group (p = .749) and between the low indoor variety group and the high indoor variety group (p = .217). With regard to negative affect, post hoc tests showed no significant differences between the value in the inexistent indoor variety group (M = 10.11; SD = 0.41), in the low indoor variety group (M = 10.00; SD = 0.39) and in the high indoor activities variety group (M = 9.63; SD = 0.29). All these results can be seen in Table 2 and are graphically represented in Figure 2 (not including negative affect, due to the absence of significant differences). Results showed that positive affect was significantly higher (p = .022) for the group that reported higher variety levels in indoor and outdoor activities (M = 17.71; SD = 5.08), whereas for the group that did not report any activity indoors or outdoors (M = 15.74; SD = 1.00), the positive affect was lower. For the group that reported higher levels of variety in indoor and outdoor activities, the positive affect was marginally significantly higher (p = .097) than for the group that reported having no indoor activity and reported low levels of outdoor activities variety (M = 15.22; SD = 1.02).
Results also showed that negative affect was marginally significantly lower (p = .055) for the group that reported low variety in the outdoor activities and reported high levels of indoor activities variety (M = 8.39; SD = 0.47) than for the group that simultaneously reported low levels of variety in outdoor activities and did not report any indoor activities (M = 11.67; SD = 1.03). No other significant or marginally non-significant differences were found.
The role of mental recreation of contact with nature
Correlations performed between the mental recreation of contact with nature and the components of subjective well-being showed a weak positive correlation between mental recreation and negative affect (ρ = .171; p < .010) and no significant correlations with life satisfaction and positive affect.
To further explore this result, three one-way Analyses of Variance (ANOVA) were performed for each of the three dependent variables — life satisfaction, positive and negative affect — with mental recreation as the independent variable. To do this, a new mental recreation variable was computed by transforming the five-point Likert-type scale into a three-point ordinal scale of low, medium and high. This was done to allow an adequate sample size in each group.
No significant differences were found between the three mental recreation levels for life satisfaction, F(2, 2) = 1.169, p = .312, η2 = .008, and for positive affect, F(2, 2) = 1.314, p = .270, η2 = .000. Differently, for negative affect, significant results were found, F(2, 2) = 6.933, p < .001, η2 = .043. Post hoc test results showed that negative affect was significantly lower for participants who reported low mental recreation (M = 8.83; SD = 3.29) compared to the ones who reported high mental recreation (M = 10.51; SD = 3.63; p < .001) and moderate mental recreation (M = 10.12; SD = 3.65; p = .048), with no significant differences between the latter two.
Discussion
This study was designed to examine the relationship between intensity and variety of contact with nature and subjective well-being. Overall, contact with nature seems important for well-being during lockdown, specifically engaging with indoor nature in various ways. On the other hand, mental recreation was associated with increased negative affect, instead of improved well-being as expected.
Relationship between intensity and variety of contact, positive and negative emotions and life satisfaction
No relevant correlation was found between the three types of well-being and the variety and intensity of outdoor activities. This may be explained by the disruption to contact with nature arising from the pandemic: being outdoors may have been perceived as a risk to some people given that was the implicit message that was communicated as a justification for compliance with ‘stay at home’ orders. Outdoor contact with nature, as representing contacts with environments that promote restorative benefits, should not be threatening (Williams et al., 2018). However, due to the worry of avoiding infection, a novel combination of preventative precautions such as mask-wearing and social distancing had to become routine (Oosterhoff et al., 2020).
Differently, both variety and intensity of indoor contact with nature were reported as potentially related to components of well-being: life satisfaction and positive affect. This may be an indication that the lockdown may have induced an adaptation to indoor environments and the corresponding readjustment in contact with nature to achieve well-being. This highlights the importance that indoor environments may assume when there is a potential absence or disruption of outdoor contact. Indoor variety and intensity were also moderately and positively correlated, the same occurring with the correlation between outdoor variety and intensity, which was positive and strong. This is in line with the literature about the restorative value of individuals’ varied and intense relationship with nature (Carrus et al., 2015; Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989; Martin et al., 2020; Tomasi et al., 2020; Ulrich, 1983). Nevertheless, it is important to emphasize the absolute novelty of the need to adapt to indoor environments when there are interferences with outdoor contact with nature and the associated restorative potential, as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The importance of variety of contact with nature
It is worth pointing out that our results suggest that the variety of indoor exposure/contact with nature appears to be associated with more indicators of well-being. However, the scores in well-being indicators showed no significant differences in relation to the different levels of indoor and outdoor intensity of contact with nature. There is agreement that nature wields greater restorative power than man-made environments (Wyles et al., 2019; Russell et al., 2013). However, there may be differences in the type of contact — indoor vs. outdoor — and indoor contact may allow compensating constraints on outdoor contact with nature. Moreover, further studies could look into the properties that predict nature’s restorative potential. Some evidence points to both the apparent purity of the natural element (a higher index of naturalness) and the visual appeal of natural environments as properties that best predict restorative potential. That is, the visual system processes natural stimuli with less effort than that needed in built environments, due to the similarity and continuity of these stimuli with the structure of the natural landscapes to which we have always been accustomed (Twedt et al., 2019). The aforementioned properties are not so much related to the intensity of contact (how many times, how long) as they are to biodiversity and the variety of contact with the natural stimuli (quality). Accordingly, a field study found that the variety of experiences undertaken in natural environments can promote widespread benefits and that the biodiversity of contact sites plays a positive role in promoting well-being (Carrus et al., 2015). Therefore, in future studies, we suggest exploring whether a greater variety of natural stimuli present in the indoor environment translates into a higher well-being index. In this case, having a range of elements from natural settings in indoor environments could thus mimic the outdoor environment.
Contact with nature can be considered a basic human need and its restorative potential as the product of a person-environment interaction comprising individual preferences and environmental conditions. Our results may reflect the interference of the relationship with outdoor nature due to the pandemic and lockdown, which highlights the need to further explore the role of indoor variety as a support for the adjustment to a new situation and (re)establishment of a positive relationship between individuals and nature when in lockdown.
Mental recreation of nature relates to negative affect
When mentally creating or recreating natural scenarios, thoughts of the pandemic and the virus may also appear through associative thinking, which may explain the higher negative affect for those study participants who had higher levels of mental recreation of nature. Disparate ideas can be linked when thoughts wander (Williams et al., 2018), and this could explain that when individuals think about nature, automatic thoughts about the pandemic may also come to mind.
Regulations restricting people from leaving the house (except to fulfil particular needs such as going to the supermarket or taking walks for exercise) must also be taken into account. Thus, and contrary to our expectations, the mental recreation of outdoor contact with nature, such as imagining one is in the forest, may be associated with an increase in negative emotions, such as desperation and anxiety, due to the inability to leave their home. Another factor that may explain this result is the inability of individuals to make contact with nature in outdoor environments with the intensity they were used to. The break in routine imposed by the lockdown may have led to more negative emotions (Dubey et al., 2020), which in turn might have been amplified by thinking about doing something which the person is inhibited from doing. Indeed, taking into account the constraints imposed on people by the pandemic situation, these results raise the question of whether mental recreation of contact with nature may remind isolated people of pleasant experiences that cannot be enjoyed in their current situation during lockdown.
Differences in well-being indicators when contact with nature is indoor vs. outdoor
This study reveals a complementary balance between outdoor and indoor contact to achieve a meaningful level of well-being, which may be justified by one environment or the other being better suited to dealing with different restorative and adaptive needs. In a study about restorative experiences, individuals’ preferences for natural environments and outdoor structures increased according to participants’ free time, while their preference for indoor environments increased with participant age. This demonstrates how the perceived restorative potential results from the person-environment interaction and derives from individual characteristics (Twedt et al., 2019). Individuals are confined to their home by the pandemic, yet they may maintain their basic need for contact with nature, which may explain the complementarity of these results.
Furthermore, future research might look into the contributions of the urban environment to well-being, which are presumably negative (Lederbogen et al., 2019), and the possibility that some psychological dimensions may not depend so heavily on natural scenarios (Pasanen et al., 2018).
Lastly, exploratory analyses of correlation were conducted separately between direct and indirect indoor contact with nature and well-being. In indoor environments, a statistically significant relationship was found between the intensity of direct contact and positive affect, revealing that gardening can correlate positively with well-being, while enjoying the view from a window may not show that same relationship. Evidence suggests that direct contact requires greater individual involvement, which enables more obvious levels of affective restoration than that resulting from indirect contact (Van Den Berg & Custers, 2011). Further research is needed to verify these results and to deepen our knowledge about how to better adapt housing if future lockdowns are needed during disease outbreaks or even natural disasters and extreme weather events associated with climate change, which require the mobilization of much needed personal and social resources to cope with the demands posed by these (Domingos et al., 2020; Gaspar et al., 2019). The same may be applicable to people who live or spend a lot of time in isolation or in isolated environments such as long stays in hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, ships, sea platforms or remote regions (e.g., South Pole).
Limitations and suggestions for future research
In future studies, to further explain some of the results obtained, longitudinal designs should be considered using the same instrument at three different moments: before, during and after lockdown. Adding to this, self-report data are a limitation and further studies could use behavioural observations of outdoor behaviour, in complement to indoor self-reported behaviour. Moreover, to confirm/validate whether individuals were thinking about nature during the mental recreation, psycho-physiological measurements could be included.
Conclusions
Despite the numerous limitations of this study, it presents preliminary varied evidence of the multiple benefits for subjective well-being that contact with nature may foster.
Exposure to nature is a restorative health promotion measure accessible to most people; it is inexpensive and brings direct benefits without the need for intermediaries, equipment or training. Society must facilitate contact with nature for its citizens to promote the benefits it brings to health and well-being, while also removing any barriers that hinder it. Governments and health authorities may see nature as a citizen health asset that should be promoted in territorial planning, nature conservation and public health policy. The benefits offered by natural environments can have an impact at individual and population health levels. In cases of interruption of contact with nature, all possible opportunities for promoting active contact with nature should be utilized, so that any disruption may be mitigated as thoroughly as possible. In this regard, the qualitative component, i.e., having a variety of contacts with nature in addition to or even more than the quantity of contacts, may present relevant benefits for well-being. Particularly, the present study reveals that in indoor environments, active contact with nature is linked to the positive affect aspect of well-being and life satisfaction: this indoor contact may function as a coping mechanism in the absence of outdoor contact and can also be seen as an additional means of attenuating physical and mental deterioration in social lockdown. Additional research into this type of contact is recommended, namely longitudinal and experimental studies which might generate insights leading to quality of life improvements as put into effect in a wide range of societal contexts: at work, in the family, in schools, in leisure, health services, architectural arrangements, technological innovation and legislative action. Moreover, it would be worth further exploring these possibilities, focusing on individuals who live or spend a lot of time in isolation or in isolated environments such as long stays in hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, ships, sea platforms or remote regions (e.g., South Pole). Well-being benefits can be potentiated in such settings by further investments in increasing opportunities and means for indoor contact with nature, not just in their quantity but also in their quality.
La naturaleza al aire libre, en el interior: relación entre contacto con la naturaleza, satisfacción vital y afectividad durante el confinamiento por la pandemia COVID-19
La pandemia de COVID-19 asociada a la propagación del SARS-CoV-2 planteó un rango de exigencias sobre los ciudadanos mayor de lo que hasta entonces se había considerado ‘normal’. Esto incrementó la necesidad de recursos adicionales para mantener el bienestar físico, psicológico y social de las personas (Gaspar et al., 2020). Se implementaron una serie de medidas a nivel mundial, siendo la más común la del confinamiento. Las medidas de confinamiento conllevaron el encierro domiciliario de las personas, con el fin de reducir la movilidad de los individuos que no cumplieran funciones esenciales (como por ejemplo las profesiones relacionadas con la salud), y en general las interacciones entre grandes grupos de personas. Esta medida se impuso inicialmente por la incertidumbre respecto a si un portador del virus podría no mostrar síntomas de enfermedad (Brooks et al., 2020), porque no estaban disponibles recursos como las pruebas rápidas de diagnóstico, el seguimiento de contactos efectivo y la vacunación. Solo se permitieron actividades esenciales, como las actividades laborales o la compra de comida, medicamentos o la visita a centros de salud (Sandín et al., 2020). Así, el confinamiento conllevó la suspensión de muchas actividades económicas y comerciales, de los desplazamientos individuales fuera del hogar y de las interacciones sociales físicamente próximas. También restringió el contacto con la naturaleza al aire libre, ya que salir del domicilio estaba sujeto a restricciones (por ejemplo, solo dentro del barrio), o incluso prohibido.
Se sabe que el contacto con la naturaleza ejerce un efecto restaurador sobre el bienestar de las personas, como han mostrado diversos estudios que han encontrado relaciones positivas entre actividades con contacto activo con la naturaleza y el bienestar (Wyles et al., 2019; Russell et al., 2013). Dadas las posibles limitaciones que el confinamiento supone para el contacto de las personas con la naturaleza, y los potenciales efectos que puede tener sobre su bienestar físico y psicológico, es importante determinar si la relación entre contacto con la naturaleza y el bienestar subjetivo se mantiene o se deteriora durante períodos prolongados de confinamiento. Se estudiaron tres componentes interrelacionados: satisfacción vital, afectividad positiva y afectividad negativa (Simões, 1992; Pavot et al., 1991; Diener, 2000) y contacto con la naturaleza. Respecto a este último, además del contacto con la naturaleza al aire libre, se tuvo igualmente en cuenta el contacto con la naturaleza en el interior, así como el contacto indirecto con la naturaleza (como por ejemplo ver documentales sobre naturaleza o contemplar un jardín por la ventana; o el acto de pensar sobre el contacto con la naturaleza o recrearlo mentalmente). Estos dos tipos de contacto han recibido mucha menos atención en la investigación de la relación entre la naturaleza y el bienestar, pero pueden cumplir una función importante y merecen ser estudiados, porque estas actividades de interior e indirectas con la naturaleza pueden haber compensado la ausencia o reducción de un contacto directo, y puedan constituir un recurso para mantener o restaurar el bienestar de las personas, especialmente si las actividades realizadas eran variadas e intensas/frecuentes.
Por tanto, este estudio pretendía evaluar la relación entre contacto directo/indirecto con la naturaleza, satisfacción vital y afectividad durante el confinamiento de la COVID-19, teniendo especialmente en cuenta el tipo de contacto (directo vs. indirecto, al aire libre vs. en el interior) y su variedad e intensidad.
Bienestar y contacto con la naturaleza: directo-indirecto y en el interior-al aire libre
Según la División de Población de las Naciones Unidas, en 2014 aproximadamente la mitad de la población mundial (54%) vivía en áreas urbanas y, para 2050, se espera que este número suba a un 66% (United Nations Department of Economics and Social Affairs, 2014). Al crecer la población es posible que el espacio disponible se vea reducido. Esto es relevante porque las pruebas muestran que el porcentaje de espacios verdes en áreas residenciales se relaciona positivamente con la percepción general de salud de sus habitantes. Se puede argumentar, por tanto, que estos espacios deberían verse como algo más que un lujo y situarse en el centro de la planificación urbana como promotores de la salud pública y social (Maas et al., 2006).
La naturaleza se asocia pues con la idea de la restauración bio-psico-social. Este estudio se centra sobre el bienestar como una categoría de restauración, que se define como una combinación de variables ambientales biológicas, psicológicas y sociales. La Teoría de la Restauración Atencional (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989), por ejemplo, afirma que la naturaleza tiene el mayor potencial restaurador; es decir, la mayor capacidad de reactivar el esfuerzo mental después de un período de trabajo intenso. La Teoría de Recuperación del Estrés de Ulrich también afirma que los ambientes naturales activan las funciones del sistema parasimpático asociadas a la restauración física y psicológica (Ulrich, 1983). Además, se ha encontrado una correlación negativa entre el contacto con la naturaleza y la depresión y la ansiedad (Tomasi et al., 2020).
Partiendo de esta base, uno de los aspectos que este estudio ha tenido en cuenta es el contacto directo y activo, es decir, cercanía física a la naturaleza al aire libre, como pasar tiempo en un jardín, en bosques, campos, playas y lugares parecidos (Russell et al., 2013). Se ha encontrado que este tipo de contacto con espacios naturales mejoran la salud física y mental y el bienestar. En línea con lo anterior, la investigación ha mostrado que visitar espacios naturales una o más veces a la semana se asocia con un mejor estado de salud (Martin et al., 2020). El aire libre (aire, agua, tierra, sustratos, biodiversidad, paisajes, océanos y mares) también se ha asociado con un incremento en los niveles de bienestar, como la felicidad y la satisfacción vital (Russell et al., 2013). Algunos estudios cuantitativos han mostrado que el contacto diario con la naturaleza durante un mes se relaciona con mayores tasas de felicidad y salud global (Richardson et al., 2016). Otro estudio encontró que era necesario un mínimo de 120 minutos por semana para mejorar el bienestar (White et al., 2019).
Por otra parte, diversos estudios también han abordado el contacto activo con la naturaleza en espacios interiores, esto es, espacios construidos por el hombre que incorporan luz natural y otros recursos, como las plantas (Russell et al., 2013). Se han encontrado pruebas que sugieren que el bienestar puede correlacionar positivamente con el contacto directo con la naturaleza, como en oficinas con plantas a la vista, en las que los trabajadores muestran altos niveles de bienestar, incluyendo satisfacción laboral y vital (Korpela et al., 2017).
El presente estudio también ha tenido en cuenta un aspecto aún menos común en la literatura, el contacto indirecto con la naturaleza, definido como el aprecio de elementos naturales sin una interacción directa. Ejemplos de este tipo de contacto pueden ser escuchar música con sonidos de naturaleza, o ver programas y ver fotografías de paisajes (Russell et al., 2013). La literatura sugiere que la estimulación visual procedente de vídeos de naturaleza o fotografías de entornos naturales (como bosques) se puede asociar con un incremento considerable en la percepción de sensaciones como ‘relajación’ y ‘confort’, a la par que se asocia con incrementos significativos en el afecto positivo y descensos significativos en el afecto negativo (McAllister et al., 2017). De acuerdo con Moran (2019), en contextos de aislamiento, en concreto de presos, el contacto indirecto con la naturaleza (como mirar imágenes de bosques) puede llevar a un incremento en las emociones positivas y un descenso de la agresividad (Moran, 2019). Además de esto, se puede plantear si pensar sobre la naturaleza o recrear mentalmente el contacto con ella, en ausencia de cualquier estímulo natural (visual, auditivo o sensitivo), puede también tener efectos positivos similares.
En general, es importante explorar el poder restaurador de la naturaleza no solo en ambientes al aire libre, ya que otras formas de contacto (en el interior, indirectos, o incluso contactos simulados mentalmente) pueden también aportar los mismos beneficios. Por tanto, dado que es necesario investigar más sobre este punto, el presente estudio buscaba contribuir a rellenar este hueco en la investigación.
Además, pretendíamos también evaluar las implicaciones de la variedad de contacto, que se define como el rango de estímulos y actividades que tienen lugar durante la experiencia natural. Si las personas evalúan el potencial restaurador de la naturaleza en función de las características que asocian a esta, y si esos atributos son un reflejo de sus contextos particulares internos y externos, una mayor variedad de contacto podría ser más eficaz. Dicho de otro modo, cuanto más amplio sea el rango de actividades, mayores serán las posibilidades de escoger una forma de disfrutar de la naturaleza que tenga beneficios restauradores. Las diversas modalidades de contacto deberían, por tanto, analizarse en relación con la ganancia restauradora, homeostática: cuanta mayor variedad, mayor capacidad restauradora. Además, la intensidad de contacto con la naturaleza, definida en términos de frecuencia y duración, que se puede cuantificar como alta o baja mediante una escala, puede también resultar beneficiosa. Ambas, intensidad y variedad, pueden traducirse en una mayor cantidad y calidad de la experiencia de contacto con la naturaleza.
Bienestar durante un confinamiento
El 30 de enero de 2020, la Organización Mundial de la Salud declaró la COVID-19 como emergencia internacional de salud pública. El 11 de marzo de 2020 se clasificó como una pandemia. Desde entonces, diversos estudios han encontrado una relación entre encierro domiciliario debido a un confinamiento nacional y bienestar: los resultados muestran efectos negativos (por ejemplo, confusión, ira e incluso síntomas de estrés postraumático) persistentes durante los meses posteriores al evento, lo que sugiere que puede tener un elevado impacto sobre la salud y el bienestar (Brooks et al., 2020). Otros estudios transversales encontraron que la mayoría de los participantes informaron haber experimentado alteraciones del sueño, ausencia de actividad física, y cierto grado de estrés debido al confinamiento (Bezerra et al., 2020). Todos estos estudios ponen de relevancia la importancia de tener en cuenta el impacto de las medidas de salud pública destinadas al control de la transmisión de enfermedades. En efecto, los riesgos psicológicos y sociales que emergieron durante la pandemia de COVID-19 ponen de relevancia la necesidad de prestar atención a los recursos personales y sociales que pueden fomentar el bienestar personal y colectivo al afrontar los desafíos que surgen en tiempos de crisis o emergencias sociales. Crisis de salud pública como la pandemia COVID-19 pueden cambiar la relación de los seres humanos con la naturaleza, y ponen en relieve el potencial de la psicología ambiental para lograr un mejor entendimiento de la transformación social y el afrontamiento en situaciones de crisis (Reese et al., 2020). La COVID-19, en concreto, sirve también como excelente ejemplo de cambio de un sistema social, que supuso una amenaza para la necesidad básica humana de conexión y las motivaciones asociadas, con efectos sobre la salud mental (Hagerty & Williams, 2020; Sandín et al., 2020).
Así pues, se han observado distintas formas de impacto sobre la salud mental de la pandemia y el confinamiento en estudios recientes: preocupación por familiares y por uno mismo; agotamiento procedente de la aplicación de constantes medidas preventivas y encierro domiciliario prolongado por el confinamiento nacional; una sensación de falta de control; y emociones como ira, angustia, y una sensación asfixiante de monotonía y aburrimiento (procedente de un ritmo de vida ralentizado; Fardin, 2020; Hamouche, 2020; S. Li et al., 2020). Además, la naturaleza parece influir sobre el bienestar de todas las personas independientemente de su estatus socioeconómico, en un movimiento transversal a toda la sociedad.
Los distintos niveles de restricciones aplicados en los confinamientos parecieron provocar un incremento (medidas de confinamiento más restrictivas) o descenso (medidas menos restrictivas) en la probabilidad de sufrir trastornos de salud mental. Además, el contacto con la naturaleza puede haber amortiguado los efectos negativos del confinamiento (Pouso et al., 2021). En línea con lo anterior, Heo et al. (2021) encontraron que las visitas a los espacios verdes (por ejemplo, bosques) se emplearon con el objetivo de aliviar el estrés. Encontraron que las personas que visitaban espacios verdes con menor frecuencia tenían más posibilidades de desarrollar una depresión grave que aquellos que mantuvieron sus visitas a los espacios verdes. También encontraron un descenso en la disponibilidad/el acceso a espacios verdes debido a las restricciones que requerían mantener la distancia física/social y al miedo a la COVID-19.
Partiendo de la literatura existente sobre la relación entre el contacto con la naturaleza y la salud mental, decidimos estudiar este fenómeno, en concreto en el contexto de un confinamiento nacional que impuso un encierro domiciliario.
Modelo teórico
El modelo teórico (Figura 1) de este estudio se basó en el modelo creado por Hartig et al. (2014) para explicar la manera en que los ambientes naturales afectan a la salud y el bienestar. Partiendo de este modelo, medimos las distintas maneras de conectar con la naturaleza, usando duración y frecuencia como variables. En base al modelo de Hartig, el modelo que proponemos incluía distintos tipos de contacto con la naturaleza: directo vs. indirecto y al aire libre/en el interior (por ejemplo, jardinería, dar un paseo en un bosque).
Tuvimos también en cuenta el marco conceptual de H. Li et al. (2021), del que incorporamos otro modo de contacto: el contacto indirecto y en el interior (como mirar plantas desde la ventana).
En conjunto, este estudio pretendía ampliar la literatura existente y los modelos de estudio de la relación entre el contacto con la naturaleza y el bienestar psicológico, incluyendo la recreación mental, así como otros tipos de contacto indirecto con la naturaleza, en el marco conceptual (por ejemplo, ver un documental o escuchar sonidos de la naturaleza).
Objetivos de la investigación
El presente estudio se puso en marcha durante el primer confinamiento nacional durante la pandemia de COVID-19 en Portugal, entre marzo y mayo de 2020, que constituyó una oportunidad única para estudiar el contacto con la naturaleza cuando la gente estaba encerrada en sus hogares.
Este estudio, por tanto, aporta un ejemplo que puede ser aplicable a otras situaciones en las que el confinamiento a un espacio cerrado es recomendado (por ejemplo, catástrofes de duración prolongada) u obligatorio (por ejemplo, prisiones, estancias hospitalarias prolongadas). En el presente estudio, el contacto en el interior incluía contacto directo con la naturaleza (por ejemplo, regar plantas, contemplar la naturaleza desde las ventanas) y contacto indirecto (por ejemplo, ver documentales sobre la naturaleza en la televisión). Por último, y en base a estudios similares, tuvimos en cuenta la frecuencia y la duración del contacto con la naturaleza como variables cuantitativas. Por otra parte, incluimos la variedad (distintos tipos) de contacto con la naturaleza como variables cualitativas, algo poco común en la literatura previa. Además, tuvimos en cuenta la intensidad de contacto con la naturaleza, una variable cuantitativa que combina la frecuencia y la duración (algo tampoco habitual en estudios previos).
En general, observamos la relación entre el tipo de contacto con la naturaleza durante el confinamiento, la satisfacción vital y el afecto positivo y negativo.
Para guiar nuestra comprensión y explicación de este objetivo, planteamos tres preguntas de investigación: ¿Existe una relación entre la intensidad y la variedad del contacto con la naturaleza con variables relativas al bienestar psicológico como las emociones positivas y negativas, y la satisfacción vital? ¿Existen diferencias en las emociones positivas y negativas y la satisfacción vital, relativas al grado de intensidad y a la variedad del contacto al aire libre vs. en el interior? ¿Existe una relación entre la recreación mental del contacto con la naturaleza y las variables relativas al bienestar psicológico?
Método
Diseño de investigación
Se desarrolló un diseño correlacional transversal entre marzo y abril de 2020, durante el primer confinamiento a nivel nacional aplicado en Portugal durante la primera ola de la pandemia de COVID-19, para recoger datos cuantitativos. En este estudio se tuvieron en cuenta las siguientes variables: satisfacción vital; afecto positivo y negativo; variedad e intensidad del contacto activo con la naturaleza, directo e indirecto, en entornos de interior y al aire libre; y recreación mental.
Muestra
La muestra se obtuvo principalmente mediante reclutamiento a través de redes sociales, incluyendo Facebook, Instagram y WhatsApp, empleando la técnica muestral de la bola de nieve. Se compuso de 310 participantes, 113 hombres (36.45%) y 197 mujeres (63.55%). Sesenta y cuatro (20.6%) participantes vivían en áreas rurales, y 246 (79.4%) en áreas urbanas. La edad media de los participantes era de 35.18 años (DT = 14.993), con valores entre los 18 y los 83 años. Respecto al nivel educativo, tres participantes (0.9%) habían completado la escuela primaria (de los seis a los 15 años), 82 (26.5%) habían finalizado la educación secundaria (de los 15 a los 18 años), 140 (42.5%) tenían un grado universitario, 58 (18.7%) un título de máster, 22 (7.1%) tenían un título de posgrado, y cinco (1.6%) habían obtenido un doctorado.
Los criterios de inclusión eran ser adulto (18 años de edad como mínimo), ser residente en Portugal, tener nacionalidad portuguesa, y competencia para leer y escribir en portugués. En cuanto a los criterios de exclusión, para evitar sesgos fueron excluidos los participantes que habían estado bajo los efectos de medicación psicofarmacológica durante los dos meses anteriores, y aquellos que en los últimos seis meses habían sido diagnosticados con un trastorno mental. Sin embargo, no se les informó de su exclusión para evitar suscitar sentimientos de discriminación.
Medidas
Se creo un cuestionario online en la plataforma Qualtrics, y se envió a los participantes durante el confinamiento (desde el 3 hasta el 19 de abril). El cuestionario incluía un consentimiento informado e información sobre las implicaciones éticas del estudio.
Se incorporaron dos medidas psicológicas para evaluar el bienestar subjetivo, ambas aplicables a adultos portugueses: SWLS — Satisfaction with Life Scale (Escala de Satisfacción Vital, Diener et al., 1985), versión portuguesa (Simões, 1992, α = .77); en este estudio el α = .79. La escala contiene cinco ítems, con una escala tipo Likert de 1 ‘muy en desacuerdo’ a 5 ‘muy de acuerdo’, referida a las dos últimas semanas. Un ejemplo es ‘Mis condiciones de vida son muy buenas’. PANAS — Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Programa de Afectos Positivos y Negativos, Watson et al., 1988), la version reducida de la version portuguesa (Galinha et al., 2014; la fiabilidad era alta para Afecto Positivo, α = .82 y Afecto Negativo α = .83), y en este estudio para el Afecto Positivo fue α = .73 y para el Afecto Negativo α = .81. La escala incluía 10 ítems, de 1 ‘Muy poco o nada en absoluto’ a 5 ‘Extremadamente’, refiriéndose a las dos últimas semanas. Un valor alto de emociones positivas indicaba altos niveles de bienestar, mientras que el afecto negativo indica niveles de bienestar bajos. Un ejemplo de afectividad positiva sería ‘Interesado’, mientras que ‘Nervioso’ indicaría afectividad negativa.
Además, se emplearon l os siguientes indicadores para medir la intensidad (duración y frecuencia) de los distintos tipos de contacto con la naturaleza: El contacto con la naturaleza al aire libre durante el confinamiento se evaluó con preguntas como ‘En la actualidad, durante el confinamiento/la cuarentena por la pandemia, indique el/los tipo/s de contacto con la naturaleza que ha mantenido fuera del hogar’. Algunos ejemplos de ítem son: acampar, pasear, hacer rutas. El contacto con la naturaleza en el interior (fuera directo, como regar plantas, o indirecto, como ver documentales sobre naturaleza) durante el confinamiento se evaluó con preguntas como ‘En la actualidad, durante el confinamiento, indique el/los tipo/s de contacto con la naturaleza que ha mantenido en el interior (incluyendo patios y balcones)’. Algunos ejemplos de ítem son: Agricultura, Jardinería, Observar la naturaleza desde la Ventana. Respecto a la duración del contacto con la naturaleza en la evaluación del contacto al aire libre y en el interior, se incluían preguntas como: ‘De media, ¿cuánto duran tus paseos?’. Algunos ejemplos de respuestas son: ‘Hasta 30 minutos’, ‘De 2 a 3 horas’. En cuanto a la frecuencia de contacto con la naturaleza en la evaluación del contacto al aire libre y en el interior, se incluían preguntas como: ‘En esta situación de aislamiento social voluntario/cuarentena obligatoria, ¿con qué frecuencia sales a pasear?’ Algunos ejemplos de respuestas son: ‘1 o 2 veces al mes’, ‘1 vez a la semana’.
A partir de estas preguntas se crearon nuevas variables compuestas: Intensidad del contacto al aire libre, e Intensidad del contacto en el interior, que surgieron de combinar duración y frecuencia (en una escala desde 0 — Inexistente, 1 — Baja intensidad, y 3 — Alta intensidad) para cada tipo de contacto, esto es, la duración de la actividad (duración media para todas las actividades llevadas a cabo, separadas para interior y aire libre) por la frecuencia de la actividad (frecuencia media de todas las actividades llevadas a cabo, separadas para interior y aire libre). La variedad de contacto representaba la cantidad media de distintos tipos de actividades realizadas, separadas según fueran al aire libre o en el interior (en una en una escala desde 0 — Inexistente, 1 — Baja variedad, y 3 — Alta variedad; nota: en un principio, se creó una categoría de ‘variedad media’, pero al haber pocas respuestas de este tipo, se agregaron en la categoría ‘Alta’).
Para evaluar la recreación mental, creamos un ítem: ‘En la actual situación de confinamiento, recreo mentalmente el contacto con la naturaleza’ para responder mediante escala Likert (1 ‘muy en desacuerdo’ a 5 ‘muy de acuerdo’).
Por último, la sección sociodemográfica del cuestionario incluía preguntas sobre el sexo, la edad, el uso de servicios de salud mental, y el consumo de medicación psicofarmacológica, contexto residencial (rural/urbano), y satisfacción con las zonas verdes en la zona de residencia.
Análisis estadístico
En primer lugar, para estimar las escalas empleadas en el estudio, se calcularon sus coeficientes alfa. A continuación, además de los análisis descriptivos realizados, se calcularon correlaciones para analizar la relación entre la intensidad y la variedad de contacto con la naturaleza y los componentes del bienestar. Para determinar las diferencias entre las variables del estudio, se llevaron a cabo tres conjuntos de Análisis de Varianza (ANOVA) de dos vías, teniendo en cuenta la intensidad de contacto con la naturaleza (al aire libre y en el interior) y la variedad de contacto con la naturaleza (al aire libre e interior) como factores y, como variables dependientes: satisfacción vital, afectividad positiva, y afectividad negativa. La edad, el sexo y el contexto residencial (urbano o rural) se exploraron como covariables en este análisis. Además, se llevó a cabo un análisis discriminatorio para validar los resultados obtenidos. Por último, y en línea con el trabajo de White et al. (2017), se exploró también el papel de la recreación mental del contacto con la naturaleza, a través de un análisis de diferencias en las variables dependientes como función de las diferencias en los niveles de recreación.
Resultados
Relación entre intensidad y variedad, afecto negativo/positivo y satisfacción vital

Diferencias en afecto negativo/positivo y satisfacción vital como función de la intensidad y variedad de contacto con la naturaleza al aire libre vs. en el interior
Después de validar los presupuestos para realizar el análisis, se llevaron a cabo tres Análisis de Varianza (ANOVA) de cuatro vías para cada una de las tres variables dependientes (Satisfacción Vital, Afecto Positivo y Afecto Negativo) con la intensidad de contacto con la naturaleza (en el interior y al aire libre) y la variedad de contacto con la naturaleza (en el interior y al aire libre) como variables independientes. Este análisis también incluía como co-variables la edad, el sexo, y el lugar de residencia (urbano o rural).
Respecto a la Satisfacción Vital, los resultados muestran que la Intensidad de Contacto en el Interior, F(3, 25) = 0.413, p = .744, η2 = .004, la Intensidad de Contacto al Aire Libre, F(2, 25) = 0.571, p = .565, η2 = .004, y la Variedad de Contacto al Aire Libre, F(1, 25) = 0.800, p = .372, η2 = .003, no mostraron un efecto significativo sobre el bienestar. Se encontró un efecto marginalmente significativo para Variedad de Contacto en el Interior, F(2, 25) = 2.957, p = .054, η2 = .020. En cuanto al Afecto Positivo, los resultados muestran que la Intensidad de Contacto en el Interior, F(3, 25) = 0.734, p = .533, η2 = .008, y la Intensidad de Contacto al Aire Libre, F(2, 25) = 0.764, p = .467, η2 = .005, no tuvieron efectos significativos sobre el bienestar. Se encontró un efecto significativo para Variedad de Contacto al Aire Libre, F(1, 25) = 4.412, p = .037, η2 = .015, y para Variedad de Contacto en el Interior, F(2, 25) = 3.201, p = .042, η2 = .022. Por último, para el Afecto Positivo, no se encontraron resultados significativos para Intensidad de Contacto en el Interior, F(3, 25) = 1.272, p = .284, η2 = .014, Intensidad de Contacto al Aire Libre, F(2, 25) = 0.522, p = .594, η2 = .004, Variedad de Contacto al Aire Libre,, F(1, 25) = 0.144, p = .704, η2 = .002, y Variedad de Contacto en el Interior, F(2, 25) = 0.517, p = .597, η2 = .003. Además, la edad tuvo un efecto significativo como covariable sobre el Afecto Positivo, F(1, 18) = 7.649, p = .006, η2 = .026; y el sexo tuvo un efecto significativo como covariable sobre el Afecto Negativo, F(1, 18) = 16.391, p < .001, η2 = .053. No se encontraron otros resultados significativos.

Afecto positivo y satisfacción vital como función de la variedad de actividades en el interior.
Los resultados muestran que el afecto positivo era significativamente más alto (p = .022) para el grupo que manifestó mantener niveles más altos de variedad en las actividades al aire libre y en el interior (M = 17.71; DT = 5.08). Entretanto, para el grupo que no informó mantener ninguna actividad ni en el interior ni al aire libre (M = 15.74; DT = 1.00), el afecto positivo era inferior. Para el grupo que manifestó niveles más altos de variedad en actividades en el interior y al aire libre, el afecto fue marginal y significativamente superior (p = .097) que para el grupo que informó no haber llevado a cabo ninguna actividad en el interior, y que manifestaron tener bajos niveles de variedad de actividades al aire libre (M = 15.22; DT = 1.02).
Los resultados mostraron también que el afecto negativo era marginal y significativamente inferior (p = .055) para el grupo que manifestó menor variedad en las actividades al aire libre y niveles más altos de variedad en las actividades de interior (M = 8.39; DT = 0.47) que para el grupo que manifestó menores niveles de variedad en las actividades al aire libre y no informó llevar a cabo ninguna actividad en el interior (M = 11.67; DT = 1.03). No se encontraron otras diferencias significativas o marginalmente no significativas.
El papel de la recreación mental del contacto con la naturaleza
En las correlaciones entre la recreación mental del contacto con la naturaleza y los componentes del bienestar subjetivo, encontramos una asociación débil entre recreación mental y afecto negativo (ρ = .171; p < .010) y ninguna correlación significativa con satisfacción vital o afecto positivo.
Para investigar este resultado más en profundidad llevamos a cabo tres Análisis de Varianza (ANOVA) de una vía para cada una de las tres variables dependientes (Satisfacción Vital, Afecto Positivo y Afecto Negativo) con Recreación Mental como variable independiente, Para ello, calculamos una variable de recreación mental, transformando la escala tipo Likert de cinco puntos en una escala ordinal de 3 puntos: baja, media, y alta, logrando así un tamaño muestral adecuado para cada grupo.
No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los tres niveles de Recreación Mental para Satisfacción Vital, F(2, 2) = 1.169, p = .312, η2 = .008, ni para Afecto Positivo, F(2, 2) = 1.314, p = .270, η2 = .000. Pero sí se encontraron resultados significativos para el Afecto Negativo, F(2, 2) = 6.933, p < .001, η2 = .043. Las pruebas post hoc mostraron que el Afecto Negativo era significativamente inferior para los participantes que manifestaron tener una Recreación Mental Baja (M = 8.83; DT = 3.29), en comparación con aquellos que manifestaron tener una Recreación Mental Alta (M = 10.51; DT = 3.63; p < .001) y Moderada (M = 10.12; DT = 3.65; p = .048), sin diferencias significativas entre estas dos últimas.
Discusión
Este estudio se diseñó para estudiar la relación entre la intensidad y la variedad del contacto con la naturaleza y el bienestar subjetivo. En general, el contacto con la naturaleza parece importante para el bienestar durante el confinamiento, en particular los diversos modos de interacción con la naturaleza en el interior. Por otra parte, la recreación mental se asocia con un incremento del afecto negativo, en lugar de con la mejora del bienestar que se esperaba.
Relación entre intensidad y variedad de contacto, emociones positivas y negativas, y satisfacción vital
No se encontraron correlaciones relevantes entre los tres tipos de bienestar y la intensidad y la variedad de las actividades al aire libre. Esto se puede explicar por la disrupción del contacto con la naturaleza provocada por las medidas impuestas durante la pandemia: algunas personas pueden haber percibido estar al aire libre como un riesgo, dado que ese fue el mensaje implícito que se comunicó como justificación del cumplimiento de las órdenes ‘quédate en casa’. El contacto con la naturaleza al aire libre, en la medida en que representa un contacto con entornos que fomentan los beneficios restauradores, no debería percibirse como una amenaza (Williams et al., 2018). Sin embargo, debido a la preocupación por evitar el contagio, se debió convertir en rutinas una nueva combinación de precauciones preventivas como el uso de mascarilla y el mantenimiento de distancia física entre personas (Oosterhoff et al., 2020).
Por otra parte, tanto la variedad como la intensidad del contacto con la naturaleza en el interior parecían estar potencialmente relacionadas con algunos componentes del bienestar: la satisfacción vital y el afecto positivo. Esto puede indicar que el confinamiento puede haber llevado a una adaptación a entornos de interior, y el correspondiente reajuste del contacto con la naturaleza, para lograr el bienestar. Esto subraya la importancia que pueden tomar los entornos de interior en ausencia o alteración del contacto al aire libre. La variedad e intensidad del contacto en el interior estaban también moderada y positivamente correlacionados, del mismo modo que la variedad e intensidad de contacto al aire libre, cuya correlación era positiva y alta. Esto coincide con la literatura sobre el valor restaurador de una relación variada e intensa con la naturaleza (Carrus et al., 2015; Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989; Martin et al., 2020; Tomasi et al., 2020; Ulrich, 1983). Sin embargo, es importante enfatizar la absoluta novedad de la necesidad de adaptarse a entornos de interior cuando se interfiere el contacto con la naturaleza al aire libre y su potencial restaurador asociado, como ocurrió durante la pandemia de COVID-19.
La importancia de la variedad del contacto con la naturaleza
Es importante apuntar que nuestros resultados sugieren que la variedad de exposición/contacto con la naturaleza en el interior parece estar asociada con un mayor número de indicadores de bienestar. Sin embargo, las puntuaciones de los indicadores de bienestar no mostraron diferencias significativas en relación con los distintos niveles de intensidad de contacto con la naturaleza en el interior y al aire libre. Existe consenso respecto al hecho de que la naturaleza aporta un mayor poder restaurador que los entornos construidos por el hombre (Wyles et al., 2019; Russell et al., 2013). Sin embargo, puede haber diferencias radicadas en el tipo de contacto (en el interior vs. al aire libre), y el contacto en el interior puede permitir la compensación de las restricciones al contacto con la naturaleza al aire libre. Además, futuros estudios podrían investigar sobre las propiedades que predicen el potencial restaurador de la naturaleza. Algunos resultados apuntan tanto a la aparente pureza del elemento natural (un índice mayor de ‘naturalidad’) y al atractivo visual de los entornos naturales como las propiedades que mejor predicen el potencial restaurador. Esto es, el sistema visual procesa estímulos naturales con menor esfuerzo que el requerido para procesar entornos construidos, debido a la similitud y continuidad de estos estímulos con la estructura de los paisajes naturales a la que siempre hemos estado acostumbrados (Twedt et al., 2019). Las propiedades mencionadas no están tan relacionadas con la intensidad de contacto (cuántas veces, cuánto tiempo) como con la biodiversidad y la variedad de contacto con los estímulos naturales (calidad). De acuerdo con esto, un estudio de campo encontró que la variedad de experiencias vividas en entornos naturales puede fomentar beneficios múltiples, y que la biodiversidad de los lugares juega un papel positivo en el fomento del bienestar (Carrus et al., 2015). Por lo tanto, sugerimos que, en futuros estudios, se explore si una mayor variedad de los estímulos naturales presentes en los entornos de interior se traduce en un índice superior de bienestar. En este caso, contar con un amplio abanico de opciones de contacto y de exposición a la naturaleza en el interior podría por tanto imitar las condiciones del entorno al aire libre.
El contacto con la naturaleza se podría considerar como una necesidad humana básica, y su potencial restaurador como el producto de la interacción entre la persona y el ambiente, incluyendo las preferencias individuales y las condiciones ambientales. Nuestros resultados indican que el confinamiento y la pandemia supusieron una interferencia de la relación de las personas con la naturaleza al aire libre, lo que subraya la importancia de explorar más a fondo el papel de la variedad de contacto en el interior a la hora de ayudar al ajuste a una nueva situación, y al (re)establecimiento de una relación positiva entre las personas y la naturaleza en situaciones de confinamiento.
La recreación mental de la naturaleza se relaciona con el afecto negativo
Cuando se crean o recrean escenarios naturales mentalmente, también pueden aparecer, mediante pensamiento asociativo, pensamientos sobre la pandemia y el virus, lo que podría explicar la mayor presencia de afectos negativos en aquellos participantes que mostraban niveles mayores de recreación mental de la naturaleza. Los pensamientos errantes pueden suscitar ideas discrepantes (Williams et al., 2018), lo que podría explicar que cuando las personas piensan en la naturaleza, también aparezcan pensamientos sobre la pandemia.
Las restricciones impuestas, que impedían a las personas salir de sus hogares (salvo para satisfacer necesidades concretas como ir al supermercado o salir a pasear para hacer ejercicio) deben también tenerse en cuenta. Por lo tanto, y en contra de nuestras expectativas, la recreación mental del contacto con la naturaleza al aire libre, como imaginarse a uno mismo en un bosque, podría asociarse con un incremento en emociones negativas, como la desesperación y la ansiedad, debidas a la incapacidad para salir del hogar. Otro factor que puede explicar este resultado es la incapacidad de las personas para contactar con la naturaleza en entornos al aire libre con la intensidad a la que estaban acostumbradas. La ruptura de la rutina impuesta por el confinamiento puede haber llevado a sentir más emociones negativas (Dubey et al., 2020), lo cual a su vez puede haberse amplificado al pensar la persona en hacer algo que no se le permitía hacer. En efecto, teniendo en cuenta las restricciones impuestas por los gobiernos sobre las personas en la pandemia, estos resultados suscitan la pregunta de si la recreación mental del contacto con la naturaleza puede hacer que las personas que sufren aislamiento recuerden las experiencias agradables que en su situación actual de confinamiento no pueden disfrutar.
Diferencias en indicadores de bienestar en función de si el contacto con la naturaleza es en el interior o al aire libre
Este estudio pone de relevancia el equilibrio complementario entre el contacto al aire libre y en el interior necesario para lograr un nivel significativo de bienestar, lo que se puede explicar porque uno u otro entorno esté más ajustado a diferentes necesidades de restauración y adaptación. En un estudio sobre experiencias restauradoras, las preferencias de las personas por entornos naturales y estructuras al aire libre se incrementaban en función de su tiempo libre, mientras que las preferencias por entornos de interior se incrementaban para los participantes de mayor edad. Esto demuestra que el potencial restaurador percibido procede de la interacción persona-ambiente, y se deriva de características individuales (Twedt et al., 2019). Durante la pandemia, las personas fueron encerradas en sus hogares, pero su necesidad básica de contacto con la naturaleza persistía, lo que puede explicar la complementariedad de estos resultados.
Además, las investigaciones futuras podrían examinar las aportaciones del entorno urbano al bienestar, que se puede presuponer negativo (Lederbogen et al., 2014), y la posibilidad de que algunas dimensiones psicológicas puedan no depender tan marcadamente de los escenarios naturales (Pasanen et al., 2018.
Por último, se aplicaron por separado análisis exploratorios de correlación entre contacto con la naturaleza en el interior (directo e indirecto) y bienestar. En entornos de interior se encontró una relación estadísticamente significativa entre la intensidad de contacto directo y el afecto positivo, mostrando que la jardinería puede correlacionar positivamente con el bienestar, mientras que contemplar la naturaleza desde la ventana puede no mostrar la misma relación. Los hallazgos previos sugieren que el contacto directo requiere de una mayor implicación individual, que permite niveles más obvios de restauración afectiva que los que se producen mediante contacto indirecto (Van Den Berg & Custers, 2011). Es necesario investigar más para verificar estos resultados, y para profundizar en nuestro conocimiento sobre cómo mejorar la adaptación de las viviendas si en el futuro se producen nuevos confinamientos por brotes de enfermedades o por desastres naturales o condiciones extremas asociadas al cambio climático, que consumen recursos individuales y sociales muy necesarios (Domingos et al., 2020; Gaspar et al., 2019). Esto también se puede aplicar a personas que pasan mucho tiempo aisladas o en entornos aislados, como estancias largas en hospitales o residencias de ancianos, prisiones, barcos, plataformas petrolíferas en el mar, o regiones remotas (por ejemplo el Polo Sur).
Limitaciones y sugerencias para la investigación futura
En futuros estudios, y para explicar más en profundidad algunos de los resultados aquí obtenidos, se podría considerar emplear diseños longitudinales empleando el mismo instrumento en tres momentos distintos: antes, durante y después del confinamiento. Además, los datos autoinformados son una limitación, y estudios posteriores podrían utilizar observaciones conductuales del comportamiento al aire libre como complemento a la conducta autoinformada en el interior. Además, para confirmar/validar si las personas estaban pensando en la naturaleza durante la recreación mental, se podrían incluir mediciones psico-fisiológicas.
Conclusiones
Pese a las numerosas limitaciones de este estudio, presenta diversas pruebas preliminares de los múltiples beneficios que fomenta el contacto con la naturaleza para el bienestar subjetivo.
La exposición a la naturaleza es una medida restauradora de fomento de la salud al alcance de la mayoría de las personas; es asequible económicamente, y aporta beneficios directos sin necesidad de intermediarios, equipación o entrenamiento. La sociedad debe poner a disposición de sus ciudadanos el contacto con la naturaleza para fomentar los beneficios que aporta a la salud y el bienestar, debiendo también eliminar los obstáculos que lo dificulten. Los gobiernos y las autoridades sanitarias deben considerar a la naturaleza como un activo para la salud de los ciudadanos, y utilizarlo en la planificación territorial, la conservación natural, y en las políticas de salud pública. Los beneficios que aportan los entornos naturales pueden ejercer un impacto sobre la salud a nivel social y poblacional. Cuando se interrumpe el contacto con la naturaleza, se deben utilizar todas las oportunidades disponibles para fomentar un contacto activo con la naturaleza, de manera que se mitiguen los efectos de tal perturbación tan a fondo como sea posible. A este respecto, el componente cualitativo, esto es, tener una amplia variedad de formas de contacto con la naturaleza puede aportar incluso más beneficios relevantes para el bienestar que la cantidad de contactos.
En concreto, este estudio muestra que, en entornos de interior, el contacto activo con la naturaleza se asocia con el aspecto del bienestar y la satisfacción vital relativo a los afectos positivos: ante la ausencia del contacto al aire libre, el contacto de interior puede funcionar como un mecanismo de afrontamiento, y se puede ver también como un medio adicional para atenuar el deterioro físico y social resultante del confinamiento social.
Se recomienda investigar más sobre este tipo de contacto, en particular estudios longitudinales y experimentales que puedan aportar conocimientos que ayuden a mejorar la calidad de vida al aplicarse en un amplio abanico de contextos sociales: laboral, familiar, escolar, el ocio, los servicios de salud, los planes de arquitectura, la innovación tecnológica y la acción legislativa. Además, vale la pena explorar más a fondo las posibilidades que ofrece a personas que viven aisladas o que pasan mucho tiempo en entornos aislados, como las estancias largas en hospitales, las residencias de ancianos, las prisiones, los barcos, las plataformas petrolíferas en el mar, o las regiones remotas (como el Polo Sur). En contextos de esta índole, se pueden potenciar los beneficios para el bienestar aumentando las oportunidades de mantener contactos con la naturaleza y los medios para hacerlo, no solo en cuanto a cantidad sino en cuanto a calidad.
