Abstract
We report the corrosion behaviour of a novel Mg–10Dy–0.7La alloy in the as-cast and solutionised conditions. The corrosion performance of binary Mg–10Dy and the new ternary Mg–10Dy–0.7La alloy was determined using a combination of immersion test, potentio-dynamic polarisation as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results reveal that the addition of La to the Mg–10Dy alloy significantly improves its corrosion performance and this improvement was due to the reduction of the micro-galvanic effect. Moreover, the presence of Dy and La promotes the development of an oxide layer which passivates the surface and further enhances the corrosion resistance of these alloys.
