Abstract

Most Psychiatrists start private practice after obtaining the Fellowship but get minimal exposure and training in Private Practice Psychiatry. The need for training in the treatment of high prevalence disorders has been increasing recognised by the College. This has been particularly reflected in 2002 training by laws.
The training program using an apprenticeship model was developed that enabled Registrars in training to work in two co-located Private Practices on a part time basis. This involved the Registrars sitting in with a Supervising Consultant on new assessments and formulating a management plan in a psychotherapeutic modality. The Registrar continues to see the patient and provides ongoing psychotherapy. The Consultant provides weekly supervision and reviews the patient if required.
The proposal was submitted to Federal Department of Health and Ageing for approval and funding after obtaining approval from the regional Training Committee. The Federal Department provided approval and ongoing funding for this project. The details of the program, as well as feedback from the Registrars and patients will be discussed with the intention of developing the model further. It is hoped that other Fellows and Services might be able to benefit from this knowledge to develop similar programs to enhance training Registrars in other locations.
