Abstract

The management of mental health presentations to major urban general hospitals is a problem in many countries. It is an ongoing problem in Australia.
Dr Darryl Watson will summarise current challenges facing service managers and clinicians in delivering these services within the large inner city general hospitals of Australia.
Dr Brett Emerson will discuss the “Royal Brisbane Model”, and evolving model of acute care used in Brisbane.
Dr Peter McGeorge will compare the model from St Vincent's Hospital, Darlinghurst to the Royal Brisbane Model with particular focus on differences and complexities of this hospital.
Dr Marcia Fogarty will present previous and current models that have been trialled at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. This will include a detailed description of the working of an Emergency Department and Extended Care Unit and a dedicated Mental Health Short Stay Unit within the hospital.
The panel will provide a question and answer session and seek active discussion from attendees.
